The Score
On Monday night, April 28, 2014, after a rehearsal with the Lake County Symphony, John Parkinson (the Conductor and Musical Director) asked me to consider playing a cello concerto with the orchestra for a concert in November. I thought about that. I looked at, and listened to cello concertos that night... found a few Iʼd be able to perform. But the composer in me held sway. “Why donʼt I compose a piece, since it takes the same amount of work as preparing a concerto, and Iʼd enjoy it more?”, I asked myself. I slept on the idea.
On Tuesday morning I woke up with a thought that tickled me. I thought, “Why not compose a multi- movement piece that features a cello solo in one of the movements? And why not write a piece that features hit themes from a movie that does not exist?” So, that is how “The Score” came to be. The concept is simple enough... there are four movements of a movie score – the movie to which the audience is invited to imagine. The movements are as follows:
1. “The Heroʼs Journey” – a “big” tonal piece
2. “The Kingʼs Court” – a rhythmic piece with musical jokes
3. “Going Home” – another “big” piece that breaks new ground while it refers to themes of the previous movements
4. “Loveʼs Embrace” – features a cello solo with orchestra
As part of a worldwide "Global Embrace" concert tour, schools in the areas where "The Score" is to be performed will be holding contests for students to create their own drawings, paintings, and screenplays to accompany it. The idea is to have the art projected behind and/or above the orchestra during the performance.
